Frances Browning, spokesperson for Churchill Insurance, said: "It is obvious that drivers in the UK feel the current fixed penalty for uninsured driving is far too low, with 35 per cent claiming the fine should be increased to at least £1,000 putting it in line with being caught without a TV licence - a considerably less serious offence."
Planning manager, Ian Hoult, informed residents at a meeting in the Crofton Community Centre that any claims for compensation would be handled by the Ministry of Defence as most insurance policies do not cover war, terrorism or government action such as the evacuations.
Clare Oldstein, head of communications for Post Office Car Insurance, said: "Our advice to motorists is to only leave valuable items in the car if it's absolutely necessary, and if they do, to make sure the items are hidden in the boot or at least out of sight of potential thieves
