Meanwhile, a third report showed that inventories held by businesses on their shelves and backlots rose by 0.6 percent in July, following an even bigger 0.9 percent increase the previous month. The slowdown in inventory buildup reflected in part stronger sales in July and should allay concerns that manufacturers will cut back sharply on production in coming months because of a buildup in unsold goods.
